Stephan Jürgens works at the intersection of performance, media and communication. He holds a PhD in Contemporary Choreography and New Media Technologies, and his research develops immersive and interactive media — 360° video, virtual reality, motion capture, data visualisation — as a means of creating and understanding performance. This work has two strands, developed during two postdoctoral research posts: novel forms of visualising creative processes, working closely with artists, at ICNOVA (BlackBox – Arts & Cognition), and the design of interactive systems, in collaboration with and for European choreographers, at ITI/LARSyS (Moving Digits).

His practice spans three professions exercised full-time — as a dancer and choreographer, whose work has been supported by the Portuguese Ministry of Culture and whose digital performance .txt won the Portuguese National Multimedia Prize (2010); as a contracted postdoc researcher; and as a university lecturer across all three study cycles. He is an integrated member of ICNOVA / NOVA FCSH and currently teaches at the Escola Superior de Dança, Universidade Politécnica de Lisboa. He has published widely in international peer-reviewed venues, including ACM conferences and Routledge.
